Short news & announcements

As trail runners from all over the world are gearing up for UTMB in Chamonix at the end of this month, a few significant announcements with regard to the Asia Trail Master points races in the second half of this year.

First and foremost, good news for all runners on the Grandmaster Quest. The Indonesia SuperTrail, MesaStila Peaks Challenge, will offer two race distances that qualify for 1 point. On top of the 100km, it has been decided -also following a few appeals from runners- that also the 65 is worthy enough of a point given the high number of elevation gain that needs to be conquered to finish that race. If you still want to sign up for MesaStila, by the way, you need to sign up by the end of this month, or take your chances in our upcoming social media contest for a free race entry. Race day is 8/9 October subject to chosen distance.

Staying in Indonesia, the Bromo Tengger Semeru Ultra is now confirmed to take place between 4 and 6 November. Race registrations via local organiser Fonesport have also just been opened. The event features the meanwhile traditional tough race distances of 170, 100 and 70, all of which also qualify for 1 point in the Grandmaster Quest. Beginning runners can also aim for a few shorter distances, without Asia Trail Master points to be won. As with Rinjani 100, this one has a tight cut off time, so come prepared! More details on BTS 2016 in the course of next week.

A few other events are closing the official registration by the end of this month. The first upcoming points race, Vietnam Mountain Marathon, is among them. Be careful, as the event is nearly fully booked, too. VMM this year offers 100km as longest race distance, on top of the usual 70 and 42, plus a few shorter races without Asia Trail Master points to be scored.

Next is Ultra Trail Mount Jiri in Korea on 1/2 October. Also this challenging race in the Jirisan National Park is closing the books by 31 August. Two solo races available over 100km and 50km, both with respectable elevation gain.

In October we have 2 more races on the calendar , for which you can sign up easily via our registration platform. Mount Falaza Ultra Trail is one of our "grassroots" races taking place in the Far East of Russia, in Primorye. That's a nature area known for skiing in winter and approx 2h by bus northeast of Vladivostok. Mount Falaza is the highlight, not super high in terms of altitude, but surrounded by dense Siberian forest... in autumn colours. A race for those looking for a new trail experience. The race organiser has loads of experience setting up adventure challenges and MTB races, and is a strong multisport athlete himself. Race date for the 60km trail: 16 October.

We have a new stage race as well coming up. The 3-day Ultra Trail Jeju takes places from 14 to 16 October on the fascinating Jeju Island south of South Korea. In total 100km need to be absorbed over three race days, of which the ascent of Mount Halla on day 1 stands out as a highlight. This is an event for beginning trail runners who like to up their game. Nevertheless, it is a prestigious race to win for established trail champions as well!

Opening the registration book next week is Ultra Trail Mapawa, the first of our two races on Mindanao island in the Philippines this autumn. Mapawa is a popular race and this year has a 50k distance as the main event. Stay tuned for more on this one in the next days.

Finally, following plenty of queries from runners, we regret to announce that it has been decided that Annapurna 100 in Nepal  will be removed from our race calendar for reasons of communication. Fans of Nepal can look forward to a new entry in our calendar next spring. More on that in the course of the coming week.

Asia Trail Master Ranking Update

After the Magnificent Merapoh Trail in Malaysia and Rinjani 100 in Indonesia, the 2016 Asia Trail Master championship has seen substantial changes at the top. Isaac Yuen Wan Ho is back on number 1 in the men's after finishing his third race this season. For the sympathetic Hong Konger, the rest of the year will be tactical and trying to improve his third best result, i.e. 350 points (incidently, Isaac scored 350 points in all his races). He also gets the Abroad Bonus, 50 extra points, for having raced at least once outside his country of residence.

Manolito Devina drops to second place, and now sees Jan Nilsen right behind him.

In the women's ranking, Tahira Najmunisaa has extended her points lead thanks to her victory in the Merapoh Trail last weekend. It will be hard for anyone to still steal the championship away from her, yet mathematically it is still possible. Philippines' Gretchen Felipe has moved up to second place after her second race win in two months. Adelinah Lintanga from Malaysia has moved up to third place, having accumulated good results in both Malaysia races so far this season.

Official results of this week's Mongolia Sunrise 2 Sunset are still pending; ATM points will be assigned next week

Ultra Trail Jeju stage race open for registration

The Asia Trail Master series is happy to announce a third points race in South Korea in the current 2016 season. From 14 to 16 October. runners will gather on Jeju Island for a three-day stage race of 100 km in total. Ultra Trail Jeju is an established event in Korea and is known as a great long weekend trip. The race has what it takes to hurt the legs, especially on day 1 with the ascent of Mount Halla in the centre of island, yet with a daily distance of around 34km is perfectly manageable for everybody. Beginning runners can also opt for a 1-day race on Saturday, the 15th over a distance of 18km.

Jeju is a volcanic island and therefore very fertile. Several environmental projects take place on Jeju, and some sites are also protected.  If you join the event, basic hotel accommodation and meals are provided via the race registration fee, so you really do not need to worry about much. The three stages also start in the morning, so you have the afternoon free for sightseeing and relaxing.

Ultra Trail Jeju offers 100 finisher points for those who complete the three stages, as well as performance points according to the standard points table. The winner thus scores 500 points for his 2016 championship total. In addition, runners who finish the three stages also collect 1 poiint for the Grandmaster Quest.

You can read more details via our cover page. Race registration goes conveniently via our registration portal, where you can use credit cards. The local Korean organiser on Jeju requires payment via wire transfer only.

Join the Asia Trail Master series in 2017

We are looking forward to a big double header this weekend with Rinjani 100 in Indonesia and Magnificent Merapoh Trail in Malaysia. Behind the scenes of the Asia Trail Master series, we have been working hard during the summer lull on next year's race calendar and overall framework. We promise you won't be disappointed :-)! Several events are already confirmed for next year and weekend dates are filling up nicely. The 2017 Asia Trail Master series will begin earlier than ever....in Thailand on 14/15 January!

The initial race calendar for the first semester of the new year will be formally announced on 15 August.

Any race organiser who wishes to join the 2017 Asia Trail Master series and enjoy the benefits of membership is kindly invited to approach us. As a first step, we kindly request to fill in this application form for us to get a better idea of your event. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via info@asiatrailmaster.com . You can also take a look at our PDF Guidebook (the 2017 version to be released soon).

Continue your Grandmaster Quest with these grand races

Ten days to go till the big trio of summer races in the 2016 Asia Trail Master series. And boy are they for real! Rinjani 100 on Lombok in Indonesia, is arguably the toughest race of all in our series with 9160m of elevation gain to be conquered in 36 hours. The Magnificent Merapoh Trail is a feast for pure runners, but heat and humidity in the rainforest will test their resilience to the maximum as well. And then there is one of Asia's great classics: the 18th edition of Mongolia Sunrise to Sunset. All three have one thing in common: 100 km races, which means they all qualify for the Asia Trail Grandmaster Quest

Who will be next to join Aleksis Capili as Asia Trail Grandmaster? And can Aleksis upgrade his shield to 2 stars? A number of runners are in any case aiming for it still this year, already having collected several points since last season. Plenty of qualifying races, too, in the next six months, so runners take your pick!

Remaining qualifying races for the Grandmaster Quest in 2016:

  • Magnificent Merapoh Trail (MAS) - 100km
  • Rinjani 100 (INA) - 100km
  • Mongolia Sunrise 2 Sunset (MGL) 100km
  • Vietnam Mountain Marathon (VIE) 100km & 70 km
  • Ultra Trail Mount Jiri (KOR) - 100km
  • MesaStila Peaks Challenge (INA) - 100km
  • Annapurna 100 (NPL) 110km
  • Bromo Tengger Semeru Ultra (INA) - 190km, 100km, 70km
  • HK 168 (HKG) - 173 km, 93km
  • UTX (CHN) - 100km
  • CM 50 Ultra (PHI) 82km
  • Ultra Trail Panoramic (THA) 165km, 100km
  • The Punisher (PHI) 82km

To become a Grandmaster, you need to finish 6 races of 70 km or more in two calendar years. That will grant you the title of Grandmaster, and a shield featuring 1 star. As you then proceed to 10 races, with no time constraints, a second star will be added to your shield, and so on until 4 stars for 20 races.

Ultra Trail Mount Jiri in Korea opens the registration

The second race in South Korea that qualifies for points in this year's Asia Trail Master series takes place on "holy" ground: Jirisan, or Mount Jiri, is one of the country's marquee mountains. The race, in its second edition, goes over the traditional ultra distances of 100km or 50km and seems suited for solid climbers. An elevation gain of nearly 6000 hm is substantial. The organisers had to wait quite some time for the necessary permits, but now the stage is set for another great event in Korea, where trail running is rapidly gaining popularity. The event takes place on 1/2 October and registration via the event website is already open.

Jirisan is of course the central part of the Jirisan National Park,  the oldest in Korea and one that places emphasis on biodiversity conservation. The highest peak is over 1900m above sea level.

The closest major airport to Jirisan is Busan, but the organisers are also arranging a bus service from Seoul station to the event, and in particular to the Kensington Resort, which functions as the event centre. Find out more logistical info here, or on the event website itself. It is important to book the bus from Seoul station and return in advance!

Event centre is the Kensington Resort where you can arrange comfortable accommodation for the race weekend. Important is to book through the event organisers, as described on our cover page

RaidLight's recommendation for Merapoh

In view of the upcoming race in peninsular Malaysia, the Magnificent Merapoh Trail, our official apparel partner RaidLight is recommending the following functional products at promotional prices for registered participants at the event.

Focus is of course on lightweight and ultra breathable given the high temperature and humidity inherent to running in Malaysia.

This special trail running tank top now has a half-zip for better ventilation control and a collar. Featuring shoulders with reinforced silicone, which makes it ideal for wearing a backpack.

Initially developed for the trail, this tank-top is suitable for all runners, and is ultra wearable thanks to its light weight and anti abrasion material - Eco-Polyester.

Available price: HKD 579 (USD 75)

Lady performer

Designed with Eco - Polyester, it has silicone grips on the shoulders (giving non-slip shoulder grip for ruck/racing sacks) and a distinctly technical look!  It is lightweight (only 115grams) quick drying and resistant to abrasion, which makes it an ideal choice for all types of running.

Available price: HKD 650 (USD 84)

You can order by sending an email to vimtech@netvigator.com  (cc info@asiatrailmaster.com) . You can collect the item(s) in the race office of the Merapoh Trail as of Friday early afternoon.

UT Sabah new in the Asia Trail Master series

After Malaysia Eco 100 and Magnificent Merapoh Trail, the new UT Sabah will be the third Asia Trail Master race in Malaysia this year. The event, produced by the Merapoh team, is scheduled for 4 December and features a 60km and 30km option in Sabah on Borneo Island. It is a race from A to B, as the start is set in Mesilau on the fringes of Kinabalu NP, and the finish is in Kundasang town. The 60k is spicy with 3500 metres of elevation gain. Lots of rolling hills, a few river crossings and hanging bridges, combined with wonderful viewpoints. The humidity in Malaysia makes every race a serious physical effort, but 60k seems like the right distance for a race in December.

Sabah is a great holiday destination for everyone. After the race, you can relax at one of the beach resorts near Kota Kinabalu. If you have energy left, you might even wish to climb Mount Kinabalu, with a summit at over 4000m one of the highest and easiest to climb mountains in Southeast Asia.

Registration for the event is opening soon.

Ranking Update - Divina and Najmunisaa enter the summer break as leaders

The 2016 Asia Trail Master series has seen some superb trail racing and fantastic performances in the first half of the year. The stars of the moment are of course Manolito Divina and Tahira Najmunisaa, who both amassed 1050 points in the two races they have competed in so far. Meanwhile, Aleksis Capili has become our first Asia Trail Grandmaster by finishing six races of 70 km or more in less than two calendar years. Truly outstanding, and arguably THE run of the season so far was Divina's Malaysia Eco 100 miles victory in May. Both the Filipino and Malaysian athletes have set their eyes on winning the Asia Trail Master championship this year, so other runners with ambition will need to get passed them in the second semester. In any case, there will be challengers.

As temperatures are rising high in most Asian countries, first there is a summer break. A welcome relief for plenty of runners, quality time to recharge the batteries. This does not mean there won't be any racing at all in summer. The next points scoring races are Magnificent Merapoh Trail (Malaysia) and Rinjani 100 (Indonesia) on the last weekend of July, closely followed by the oldest race on our calendar: the Mongolia Sunrise 2 Sunset on 3 August. Before that, however, we also have the new 2017 Candidate Race in Siberian Russia: Altai Ultra Trail.

One important conclusion of the first six months of 2016 is that most events have shown great maturity. Problems with course markings, stewards and logistics, which characterised several events in Asia last year, were not absent but remarkably fewer. The Asian trail running scene has developed fast in a short period of time, and we congratulate the race organisers within our Asia Trail Master series for their great work and cooperation. Let's move on in the same way, at all times keeping the standards put forward by ITRA in mind, particularly concerning safety and security measures. As announced earlier this week, we now formally accept applications from event organisers to join the 2017 Asia Trail Master series. Please remember that we have a maximum number of races per country, so better to apply early rather than late. We will announce the initial race calendar for 2017 in the first week of August.

Any companies or brands keen on sponsoring the Asia Trail Master series and/or runners are also very welcome to contact us on info@asiatrailmaster.com

Returning to the 2016 points championship, remember that the best three points results for each runner will be taken into account for the final ranking at the end of the year. The last race is the grassroots race in Cambodia on 18 December, the Two Mountains Marathon. Two more SuperTrail events remain on the agenda: MesaStila Peaks Challenge in Central Java, Indonesia, on 8/9 October, and Clark-Myamit Falls Ultra in Philippines on 27 November. SuperTrails give finishers 50 bonus points.

This weekend we have the 2017 Candidate race on Mindanao in the Philippines, Mt Hamiguitan Trail. We wish all participants a great race, and all other runners a fun and relaxing break!

Ultra Trail Panoramic enters the Asia Trail Master series

We are happy to announce the inclusion of Ultra Trail Panoramic as one of the final big races in the 2016 Asia Trail Master series. It will also be the first ever race for points in Thailand! This is big ultra trail with a choice between 100 miles or 100 km in the north of the country. What's more: this race runs from A to B, from Maehongson to Pai, making it very special, indeed! Date of the event is 9 to 11 December.

Event organiser is the renowned company Teelakow, who have built up expertise via their successful UTKC event each February (sneak announcement: UTKC will enter the Asia Trail Master series next year as Thailand's SuperTrail race!). Race Director Peeradon Suksawat is expanding his portfolio with this race and is keen to see many runners from all over Asia on the Panoramic Trail. The course has been tested this month by none other than Jan Nilsen, the Norwegian living in Thailand who has been a protagonist in many Asia Trail Master races already.  The Panoramic Trail offers a lot of variety, and has a lot of runnable sections as well. 7000 metres of elevation gain on 100 miles is highly respectable, but pure runners do have a chance here to get on the podium. However, they may need to anticipate in the race, as the biggest obstacle comes at the end: Mieang Mountain. Nearly 1200 metres of elevation gain on one long climb to a top altitude of 1682m. After crossing the summit, it is 15km all downhill to the finish in Pai.

100 miles and 100 km, this means finishers on both distances score 1 point for their Grandmaster Quest .

Check our event cover page for the key details of the race, as well as information about logistics. The international gateway closest to the two towns is Chiang Mai. There are plenty of options from there, but also from Bangkok if you have more time on your hands.

Registration has opened. You can sign up easily via the event organiser itself, or via our Asia Trail Master registration portal (easy if you already have a profile).

2017 race calendar applications are now being accepted

This weekend we go to Japan for the Echigo Country Trail in Nagaoka, Niigata. It is the last points scoring race in the Asia Trail Master series of a busy spring period before a six-week break in the heat and humidity  of summer. Time for us to already plan ahead and put together the race calendar for the first semester of 2017. Several events are already confirmed for next year and weekend dates are filling up nicely. Today we can already guarantee that the new season will begin several weeks earlier compared to 2015 and 2016.

Any race organiser who wishes to join the 2017 Asia Trail Master series and enjoy the benefits of membership is now officially invited to approach us. As a first step, we kindly request to fill in this application form for us to get a better idea of your event. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via info@asiatrailmaster.com . You can also take a look at our PDF Guidebook (the 2017 version to be released soon).

More news about the 2017 series, new partners, prizes, updated regulations and points tables will be officially announced during summer.
